ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY
Grow wisely, invest responsibly

Protect our air, land, and water—while saving residents money—by cutting waste, conserving energy, and building resilient, low-carbon neighbourhoods..

How we'll do it
  • Cut energy use in town facilities: Complete audits, convert to LED, and phase in high-efficiency heating/cooling; add solar where roofs allow.
  • Move cleaner, safer: Extend multi-use trails, add Safe-Routes-to-School fixes, install public EV chargers, and enforce anti-idling zones.
  • Reduce waste at the source: Expand organics collection and yard-waste days, improve recycling signage, and prefer low-waste products in town purchasing.
  • Grow the urban forest & protect water: Plant and maintain street trees, use drought-tolerant landscaping, and add rain gardens to manage stormwater.
  • Build for resilience: Update development standards for energy-efficient buildings and green infrastructure; offer incentives and guidance for home retrofits.
2
MANAGE WELL-PLANNED GROWTH
MANAGE WELL-PLANNED GROWTH

Build a strong, resilient local economy by backing small business and practical infrastructure.

How we'll do it
  • Direct growth to serviced areas: Concentrate housing and employment along town-centre corridors and near schools, shops, and transit using well-defined Area Structure Plans.
  • Infrastructure first: Align approvals to a 10-year capital plan; use “growth-pays-for-growth” (off-site levies) so roads, water, and utilities keep pace.
  • Compatible infill & design standards: Allow gentle density (suites/duplexes/rowhomes) with design rules that match neighbourhood character; streamline permits with clear checklists.
  • Transportation that scales: Require traffic impact assessments and developer-built upgrades; coordinate signals, add turn lanes where needed, and complete walking/biking links.
  • Parks & amenities as we build: Secure land or cash-in-lieu early; deliver play spaces, trails, and gathering areas in step with each phase, backed by maintenance plans.
3
LISTEN, RESPOND, BE ACCOUNTABLE

Be easy to reach and quick to act—listen first, respond fast, and show the public exactly what we decided and why.

How we'll do it
  • One front door + fast response: Create 48-hour acknowledgement, clear resolution targets, and an escalation path.
  • Transparent decisions: Post council agendas and background packets early; after major votes, and publish a plain-language “Why we decided”summary.
  • Public dashboards & open data: Quarterly report cards on budgets, capital projects, service times, and request resolution rates—downloadable as open data.
  • Regular listening: Monthly “Coffee with Harold,”community advisory tables, and online surveys with summaries posted.
4
ENHANCE POLICING
Community safety

Practical steps to keep neighbourhoods welcoming and safe—prevent issues early, respond faster, and design for safety.

How we'll do it
  • Partner with RCMP and bylaw for coordinated patrols in parks, trails, and hotspots.
  • Add traffic‑calming, brighter crosswalks, and safe‑routes‑to‑school fixes at priority locations.
  • Improve lighting and sightlines in public spaces; fast‑track graffiti removal and repair.
  • Launch a simple online “report it” tool with clear timelines and status updates.
  • Support community‑led programs that reduce risk and build connection.
5
AFFORDABLE HOUSING
Accessible services

Make it possible for seniors, young families, and key workers to live in Stony Plain by adding the right homes in the right places—without losing neighbourhood character.

How we'll do it
  • Enable gentle density: Allow duplexes, triplexes, suites, and small infill near services and along transit.
  • Fast-track approvals: Give affordable projects a dedicated planner and a 60-day permit target.
  • Unlock public/under-used land: RFPs with non-profits and builders for mixed-income housing.
  • Secondary suites, safely: Streamlined permits, standard plans, and waived fees for safety upgrades.
  • Partner up for funding: Pursue provincial/federal programs to multiply local dollars.
  • Design that fits: Height/setback standards so new homes match neighbourhood character.
